MEDICAL TOURISM
The Philippines is pursuing a policy of Medical Tourism. There are some good hospitals in the Philippines,
and two hospitals have been accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI): St. Luke’s Medical
Center in Quezon City and The Medical City in Rizal. The JCI is the global arm of the U.S. based Joint
Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the same body that certifies over 18,000
hospitals in the U.S. The JCI provides the basis for the accreditation of hospitals throughout the world
through quantifiable benchmarks for patient care. These hospitals offer a quality of patient care equal to the
better hospitals in the U.S.
St. Luke’s Medical Center, a 650 bed hospital first accredited in 2003, is an International Affiliate of New York-
Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Weill Cornell Medical
College of Cornell University, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. St Luke’s, the foremost and
most respected hospital in the Philippines, is in Metro Manila. The Medical City, a 500 bed hospital first
accredited in 2006, is known for its excellence in Cardiovascular, Cancer, Neuroscience and Regenerative
Medicine. It has a staff of 1000 physicians and serves some 40,000 inpatients and 380,000 outpatients each
year. Makati Medical Center, also in Metro Manila, is considered to be one of the best hospitals in the
Philippines.
TAGAYTAYLAND
St. Luke’s Medical Center
There are 13 hospitals in Metro Manila accredited by the
Accreditation Department of the Philippine Health Insurance
Corporation of the Republic of the Philippines. Among these
are, of course St. Luke’s Medical Center, the Makati Medical
Center, and Tagaytay Hospital Systems.
The hospital nearest to the site is the newly constructed, state of the art, 100 bed Tagaytay Hospital which
sits beside the Tagaytay Rotunda only 6 miles from the site. It is staffed with medical specialists from
Metro Manila teaching hospitals who speak English. It houses state-of-the-art medical equipment and
facilities providing tertiary care.
Tagaytay Hospital
One reason Medical Tourism is succeeding is that Philippine hospitals can provide major medical
procedures at a cost of up to 80% less than the same procedures would cost in the U.S. with a high
percentage of optimal patient outcomes.
