FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

In the Philippines, food is an integral part of local art and culture as well as
part and parcel of communal existence.  Eating out is not necessarily
expensive. One can eat lunch in a shopping mall for $1 and have a
surprisingly good meal. You would be hard pressed to spend more than
$15 for an excellent dinner for two at a typical Filipino restaurant. The
products coupled with spectacular views of the landscape add pleasure to
the experience. One will never run out of dining establishments in
Tagaytay, be it traditional Filipino dishes, European cuisine, American
style, or the ever present fast food chains. It is said that some McDonalds
will even deliver fast food to your door – perish the thought.

Some of Tagaytay’s most prominent and frequented restaurants include
Josephine Restaurant, Manos Greek Taverna, Tom Sawyer, Alamat
Restaurant, Taalena Restaurant at the Casa Taal, and Fire Lake.
Josephine Restaurant in Tagaytay (photo top left) is the absolute best
Filipino Restaurant in the greater Tagaytay and in the Metro Manila area.
Though a bit pricey, compared to other local restaurants the service, food
and view is outstanding. On the weekends, Josephine’s has as an
incredibly cheap, all you can eat, buffet for around $5. But, get there early.
They are always packed.

Also, the stretch of the Tagaytay-Batangas Highway also has a host of
prominent restaurants including Rojonet Restaurant, Ronamar Restaurant
in Maharlika West, Aure’s Restaurant, Butchay’s Restaurant in Mendez
Crossing West, and Viewsite Restaurant in Mendez Crossing East.
SHOPPING

The Philippines is a haven (or heaven) for serious shoppers. The opportunities extend from
flea markets with all the local color and tropical trinkets to large malls where brand name
merchandise is available at prices substantially discounted from U.S. prices. American
Express, Diners Club, Master Card and Visa are widely accepted in major establishments
throughout the large cities.

There is a mammoth mall in Metro Manila called the Mall of Asia (MOA) which is the largest
mall in the Philippines, and is said to be the 7th largest in the world. Located by Manila Bay,
the MOA as it is more commonly called, is perfect for viewing sunsets and occasional
pyrotechnic displays. In addition to the usual food courts and department stores, it has a
number of first rate restaurants, premiere theatres, an IMAX, an auditorium for live musical
concerts and theatrical performances, an Olympic size ice skating rink, and 600 shops.
GOLFING

The beautiful tropical climate of the Philippines is the back drop for many
of Asia’s finest golf courses designed by top players such as Jack
Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Gary Player among others. These venues
host prestigious international and local tournaments such as the Johnnie
Walker Classic, the World Amateur Golf Championships, the World Cup,
the Asian PGA, and the Philippine Open.

SAILING

The Philippines, being one of the world’s largest archipelagos with over 7,000 islands and a
coast line twice as long as that of the U.S., has a great seafaring history. With 3,200
beaches and coves, sailing can be a great adventure. Every stop offers a new experience.
Sailing is best between October and May when the risk of high winds is minimal.

Lake Taal, which is a large lake of approximately 10 miles by 15 miles, offers an ideal place
for sailing. The Taal Lake Yacht Club (TLYC), situated in Barrio Santa Maria harbor in
Talisay, is only 4 scenic miles from the site. It offers a number of water sport activities
among which is fresh water sailing. It is sometimes referred to as the sailing mecca of the
Philippines. Although referred to as a club, the TLYC is family oriented and non-members
are welcome to enjoy the club facilities for a nominal fee. It also sponsors windsurfing,
rowing, kayaking, and has an excellent camp ground.

Experienced sailors will find many destinations to delight them. Beginners can sign up for
sailing lessons, or opt for a sailing tour with their own yacht and crew at a reasonable price.
Sailing instructors use the U.S. Sailing and U.S. Red Cross program of 19 basic skills as a
teaching guide including their books, exams, and other training materials. Even
grandchildren of the retirement village residents who are at least 12 years of age can sign
up for a sailing program with a certified instructor and coach.
SNORKELING AND SCUBA DIVING

Snorkeling and scuba diving is great entertainment in the Philippines. There
are many square miles of coral reefs, some of which have grown since the Ice
Age. There are over 100 reef slopes, over 800 classes of corals, over a
thousand species of marine life, over 400 fish species and over 500 fish
families. It constitutes the most populous and diverse aquatic ecosystem to
be found anywhere. Anilao, in the southeast tip of Batangas, is a worldwide
destination for scuba diving and snorkeling. From the subject site to Anilao it
is about 34 miles.  It has does not have powdery sand beaches, but rather
faces the ocean starkly with a tantalizing variety of sea water creatures. The
totally clean, clear, blue water beckons to all who love to swim, scuba dive,
snorkel, fish, sail, and windsurf. The water is 83% Fahrenheit, visibility for
scuba divers is over 400 hundred feet, and scuba divers can go to a depth of
well over 100 feet.
SURFING

The surfing capital of the Philippines is the Island of Siargao. It is a southern island some
distance from the site. In the past, going to Siargao meant a domestic flight from Manila to
Siargao, and then a boat trip to Siargao Island. However, beginning March 4, 2009 the
easiest, fastest, most convenient way to Siargao now is by flying Cebu Pacific Airline direct to
Siargao Island via Cebu. However, for those who love to surf, or just like to watch good
surfing, the surfing there is the stuff of surfing legend.
